Abstract

In this paper, a new method employing heuristic rules is presented for optimal reconfiguration of distribution networks with the aim of loss reduction and load balancing. We use two separately algorithms for each objective. In passing from the initial configuration to the final one, for the two above algorithms, network parameters (contain loss and load balancing index) are calculated for each configuration and all intermediate configurations are stored. The optimal configuration is chosen from the viewpoints of loss reduction and load balancing with regarding importance grade of each objective. The current and voltage constraints and transfer power of lines in the distribution network are not crisp and have a fuzzy nature. Therefore, implementation of the proposed algorithm by considering fuzzy restrictions for these constraints leads to a configuration which is more adaptable to the realities of the network. So, the proposed algorithm with fuzzy constraints also is solved and its impression on optimal solution under different circumstances of loading is studied in the network. Finally, to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, the algorithm is implemented on two standard networks and the results are presented. © 2006 CRL Publishing Ltd.
