Organization profile

The Faculty of Literature and Humanities at University of Isfahan, with its roots dating back to 1946, represents one of the most venerable institutions for humanities studies in Iran. Housed in a historic building that beautifully blends traditional Persian architecture with modern educational facilities, the faculty comprises eight departments: Persian Language and Literature (with specializations in classical poetry, contemporary literature, and textual criticism), History (with particular strengths in Safavid and Qajar history), Philosophy (noted for its work in Islamic philosophy and comparative philosophy), Linguistics (a pioneer in Persian computational linguistics), Arabic Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, and Cultural Studies. The faculty library, established in 1952, contains rare manuscripts including 120 illuminated medieval texts and the personal library of the renowned scholar Ahmad Samii Gilani. Our research centers include the Center for Isfahan Studies (documenting the city rich 2000-year history), the Persian Language Academy (regional branch), and the Digital Humanities Lab (developing tools for analysis of Persian texts). The faculty publishes three peer-reviewed journals: "Literary Arts" (indexed in Scopus), "Historical Studies of Iran", and "Philosophical Investigations". With 75 full-time faculty members (including 25 full professors) and approximately 1,200 students, the faculty has produced many distinguished alumni who have become prominent writers, historians, and cultural figures. International collaborations include joint research projects with the Sorbonne, Oxford, and Leiden University, as well as the annual "Persian Literary Heritage" conference that attracts scholars from around the world. The faculty museum displays archaeological artifacts from regional excavations and a unique collection of historical documents related to Persian literary history.
